Blogger Wan Muhammad Azri Wan Deris, better known as Papagomo, has called on former deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to withdraw his bid to contest for the Umno presidency.
Wan Muhammad Azri said Zahid should follow outgoing Umno vice-president Hishammuddin Hussein's example not to contest top party posts and make way for party veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, also known as Ku Li, to become president.
"I and many others want Razaleigh as Umno president. Give way to Razaleigh to take on this responsibility for the sake of Umno, and not for the interest of any individuals," he said in a statement today.
Razaleigh has not filed his nomination to contest for the Umno presidency, although there were growing calls for him to make such a move.
Wan Muhammad Azri, who is contesting for an Umno Youth exco post, said electing Razaleigh as party president will make the country's youths realise that Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad is a dictator.
"When Razaleigh becomes Umno president, then the youths will know who he is, and then they will know who Mahathir really is," he said.
Razaleigh last made a bid for the Umno presidency in 1987, a contest which he lost to Mahathir by just 43 votes.
This triggered a series of events in which Umno was deregistered and short-lived splinter group Semangat 46 was formed.
At present, there are only two candidates for the Umno presidency, namely Zahid and blogger Rahmat Azim Abdul Aziz.
Besides Razaleigh, there have also been calls for Kelantan Umno chief Mustapa Mohamed to contest for the presidency.
Mustapa, however, has stated he will not be contesting the top three party posts. -Mkini
