ALOR STAR – Police have dismissed claims that former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak and his family were attempting to flee the country through Langkawi.
Kedah police chief Commissioner Datuk Zainal Abidin Kasim said the police were well informed about Najib and his family’s arrival in Langkawi.
“He (Najib) came to Langkawi for a holiday with his family members. Najib had also met former Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah and several Umno leaders.
“However, it was just a normal or a routine meeting,” Zainal Abidin told theSun today.
He also pointed out that Najib’s personal security is still accompanying Najib and his family in Langkawi.
Zainal Abidin then advised the public to not jump to conclusions and speculate on the matter as it would cause tension among the public.
On Sunday, Immigration director-general Datuk Seri Mustafar Ali assured Malaysians that Najib and his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor are still in the country.
He said Najib and his family were just taking a holiday in the island resort off Kedah, amid public concern that both may have gone abroad while the police and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) have yet to wrap up investigations on the duo’s involvement in alleged money laundering crimes in 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).
Najib’s arrival in Langkawi was also verified by the Kedah Immigration Department director Zuhair Jamaludin.
Pictures of Najib and Rosmah and several trolleys loaded with luggage at the KL International Airport in Sepang, Selangor and later at the Langkawi International Airport in Kedah started spreading through the internet on social media platforms on Sunday.
Netizens expressed alarm when a Facebook user claimed to have spotted Najib near the hallway for international departures.
Both Najib and Rosmah have mostly kept to their private residence in Taman Duta here in the past one month after the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition lost federal power in the May 9 general election.
In the early days after the BN electoral defeat, Najib said he and Rosmah had planned to fly to Indonesia for a short holiday and for self-reflection, but were thwarted when the Immigration department barred the duo from leaving the country. – Sundaily

Kedah police chief Zainal Abidin Kasim has dismissed social media speculation that former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak and his wife Rosmah Mansor, who have been slapped with a travel ban, were trying to flee the country.
This was after photographs emerged yesterday claiming that the couple had arrived in Langkawi, a northern island near the Thai border, with some 30 pieces of luggage.
“He arrived in Langkawi with his family for a holiday and had met with the former Kedah menteri besar (Ahmad Bashah Mohd Hanipah) and a number of other leaders.
“It was a routine meeting and he had already been playing golf on the island for two days,” he said.
Zainal said such rumours should not be circulated as it would cause unease among the public.
Najib and his wife were slapped with a travel ban shortly after BN lost power in the May 9 general election.
The government said this was to avoid the possible need for extradition as the former prime minister is being investigated for the alleged multi-billion ringgit corruption scandal relating to 1MDB.
In a related development, China Press reported that Najib, along with one of his sons and friends, had booked a yacht for a fishing excursion while in Langkawi.
However, the plan was scuttled due to bad weather. – MKINI
