PORT DICKSON: PKR’s Port Dickson candidate Anwar Ibrahim last night assured voters of his commitment to developing the constituency, saying he had already secured three projects for the area.
“Much can be done here,” he said at a ceramah attended by about 200 people in Sri Tanjung.
For the first project, he said, there had been a tourism venture. “I told them that if they want to build a new five-star property, they have to fulfil a condition I set, which is to build medium to low-cost housing for the people here.
“Do you know how I managed to do that? Because I didn’t take money from them. Otherwise I’d have taken RM5 million and kept it.
“But instead, I told them I would discuss with the menteri besar how we could expedite the project (including a review of Port Dickson’s town planning) and ensure that it can be completed at a lower cost.”
The PKR president-elect said it “didn’t make sense” for people to stay in five-star properties.
“Where are the locals to stay? So they have agreed to this. I will announce the details later.”
He said an airline company in the region had also agreed to launch a special project in Port Dickson to make the constituency its base.
“This, too, we will announce later. Those who graduated in engineering, accountancy and law, and those in blue-collar industries, they will get jobs.
“I will announce this before the campaigning period is over. Don’t worry, I will announce it,” he added. “If the people cannot trust me, I am not worthy to be an MP.”
He said the third project was in the education sector, where extra classes would be offered to students at the primary and secondary levels.
“When we launch it, we will invite representatives of parent-teacher associations to join,” he said.
However, he said Education Minister Maszlee Malik and Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail would not be invited.
“This election, we won’t do what was previously done where before the election, ministers would go down to the ground for all sorts of activities, then later (after the election is won), they disappear for five years.”
The Port Dickson seat was vacated by its MP Danyal Balagopal Abdullah to pave the way for Anwar’s attempt to return to Parliament.
Danyal, a former naval officer, won the seat in the May 9 polls with 36,225 votes, beating Barisan Nasional’s VS Mogan (18,515 votes) and PAS’ Mahfuz Roslan (6,594 votes).
The Port Dickson by-election will see a seven-way fight between Anwar, Lt Col (R) Mohd Nazari Mokhtar (PAS) and four independent candidates – former Negeri Sembilan menteri besar Mohd Isa Abdul Samad, social media personalities Stevie Chan Keng Leong and Kan Chee Yuen as well as Anwar’s former personal assistant, Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan. - FMT
