Don't wait until Harapan 'destroys' country, Lokman tells anti-SST protest

Umno Supreme Council member Lokman Noor Adam once again led some 30 supporters in protest today, this time against the sales and service tax (SST).
Lokman, who heads the NGO Pemantau Malaysia Baru, gave a speech outside Pertama Complex in Kuala Lumpur where protesters gathered around noon.
"We have heard the previous government explain why we needed to change from the GST to the SST. There are two parts to the SST, the sales tax from 1972 and the service tax from 1975.
"Because it has been so long, there are some unscrupulous traders who have found ways to avoid paying taxes," he said, reiterating the argument that the government collected more revenue with GST as it was a more transparent taxation system.
In his speech, Lokman took a swipe at Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng, and said people should speak up against any move that would further damage the country's future.
"If we have to wait another five years to take over, we will be taking over a country that has been destroyed," he claimed.
The Umno leader also said that there was no need for them to engage in politics of slander, as the present administration's mistakes can be used against them.
"We just need to make it viral, increase public's awareness to make them put pressure on the present government," he told the protesters, who carried anti-SST placards and chanted "Slow slow tipu" (lying slowly) to mock the acronym of the tax.
The crowd dispersed after two hours.
'Reports against police'
Lokman later told reporters he would consider taking legal action against the police over a scuffle which broke out during his protest earlier this month against the Attorney-General's Chambers' move to drop charges against Lim.
"We have made a police report, we filed a complaint to the police's disciplinary committee and we're considering taking legal action," he said.
Dang Wangi police chief Shaharudin Abdullah was at the time seen snatching Lokman's microphone, while about 20 police personnel blocked the marchers who abandoned their original gathering point at Sogo shopping centre.
When contacted on today's protest, Shaharuddin confirmed that no official notice had been submitted by the organisers, and said that they would be investigated under Section 9 of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012. - Mkini
