Hadi: Fate of Act 355 now in the hands of Harapan

PAS MUKTAMAR | It is now up to the Pakatan Harapan administration to determine the fate of the proposed amendments to the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 (Act 355), PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang said today.
Speaking at the party's 64th muktamar in Kuala Terengganu, Hadi stressed that the PAS-led governments of Kelantan and Terengganu were ready to work together with the federal administration to further empower syariah law.
"Earlier, PAS saw room to uphold the Syariah Court as the core of legal implementation (of syariah law in this country), and thus PAS proposed amendments to Act 355 in Parliament in 2016.
"Now, it is in the hands of the new federal government to decide on their attitude towards the bill," he told delegates at the muktamar.
In his policy speech, Hadi said PAS was willing to enter discussions with Putrajaya to make the amendments happen.
He pointed out that the agenda to strengthen syariah law in the Federal Constitution had begun in the 1950s, before PAS made amendments to related state-level provisions in Kelantan and Terengganu 40 years later.
"This proves the determination of PAS, with patience and wisdom (hikmah), to realise this agenda."
PAS had proposed the Act 355 amendments to increase the jurisdiction of the Syariah Courts via a private member's bill in Parliament.
The bill seeks to increase sentencing limits to an RM100,000 fine, 10 years' jail and 100 lashes, up from the present RM5,000 fine, three years’ jail and six lashes.
Thus far, it has been tabled three times in Parliament under the previous BN administration, but was never debated. - Mkini
