I became a lawyer again to meet Anwar in prison, said Daim

Daim Zainuddin disclosed that he had held discussions with the PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim about six times when the latter was in the Sungai Buloh prison.
Daim said he had to become a lawyer again in order to gain entry to the prison and meet Anwar, reported New Straits Times based on TV3's "Soal Rakyat" programme featuring the Council of Eminent Persons (CEP) chairperson yesterday.
"Meeting Anwar was difficult. The only ones allowed in were family members and lawyers.
“To overcome this, I became a lawyer again. That way, I gained entry to the prison and we held discussions about six times,” he said.
Daim was later barred from meeting Anwar and he subsequently wrote to then prime minister Najib Abdul Razak to seek clarification.
“They (the BN government) must have received reports in certain matters (on the meetings). But it’s okay because Anwar and I had already discussed matters,” he said, as quoted by NST.
In January, a media portal had caught wind of Daim returning to the legal practice when the checks in the Bar Council website showed that Daim obtained his certificate to practise law in that month.
Free Malaysia Today reported that the 79-year-old, who started his career as a lawyer, had renewed his practising certificate and is registered under the legal firm Messrs Daim & Gamany.
Daim later became property developer, among others, and was appointed by then prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad in 1984 to the post of finance minister.
Known to be a close ally of Mahathir, the former finance minister became a bitter rival to Anwar, who rose to be deputy prime minister before he was sacked in 1998.
After Pakatan Harapan won the May 9 general election, Mahathir is back as prime minister, while Daim was named CEP chief and Anwar the prime-minister-in-waiting. - Mkini
