Independent candidate wants to ensure Umno's defeat in PD polls

Former MIC secretary-general G Kumar Aamaan, who is planning to contest as an independent in the Port Dickson by-election, wants to ensure that Umno is defeated.
Kumar claimed that Umno must be taught a lesson because it has failed to mend its ways despite losing power in the 14th general election.
“My main objective is to ensure Umno suffers a massive defeat in the by-election.
“Many believe that I am planted by BN in the by-election. Actually, I would prefer if Pakatan Harapan wins. What is important is that Umno must be defeated,” he told Malaysiakini.
On the same note, Kumar claimed that there are voters in Port Dickson who are dissatisfied with Harapan's administration.
“They feel Harapan is similar to BN, which hoodwinks them with sweet promises. From my observation, there are those who will vote for Umno although they dislike BN (because of this).
“My focus is on this group, especially the more than 12,000 Indian voters,” he added.
Responding to a question, Kumar said he respected MIC's decision not to contest in the by-election.
“I support MIC president SA Vigneswaran's disappointment with Umno... This is the arrogance of Umno which we want to end,” he added.
Last week, Port Dickson's incumbent MP Danyal Balagopal Abdullah announced that he is vacating the seat in order for PKR president-elect Anwar Ibrahim to contest in the by-election.
This would pave the way for Anwar's return to Parliament after a three-year hiatus.
Although Umno has not confirmed if it would contest in the by-election, speculation is rife that Linggi assemblyperson Abdul Rahman Mohd Redza might be named as its candidate.
PAS, on the other hand, has pledged to support the Umno candidate.
The Election Commission has yet to announce the date for the by-election. - Mkini
