KOTA KINABALU: Kimanis MP Anifah Aman says he will help to gather support from oppositions MPs should the federal government table a proposal to restore the status of Sabah and Sarawak as equal partners in the federation.
Anifah said in a statement today that as a Sabahan, he was very excited about Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s announcement on the matter as this is what leaders in Sabah and Sarawak have been fighting for.
“I welcome Prime Minister Dr Mahathir’s statement that the federal government has agreed to restore the status of Sabah and Sarawak in accordance to Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) which is the basis of the establishment of this country 55 years ago,” he said.
The former foreign minister believed other opposition MPs from Sabah and Sarawak would support the proposal as long as it was in accordance with the MA63.
Commenting on the payment of oil royalty, Anifah said the federal government should first take the necessary steps to acknowledge the intent and spirit of MA63.
“Only after agreeing to it then we can further negotiate on the quantum of payment. This has to be done for the benefit of the people in Sabah and Sarawak.
“The federal government led by Pakatan Harapan today should immediately begin the move to implement MA63 without delay or excuses,” he said.
Anifah, together with then minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Nancy Shukri from Sarawak, headed a Cabinet committee to look into the restoration of the rights of Sabah and Sarawak under MA63.
He also started an NGO called MySabah to reclaim Sabah’s rights, especially the return of 40% of net revenue collected by the federal government, to the state.
The Umno MP even threatened to quit the party if the federal government failed to fulfil the requirements under the MA63 after promising to do so several times. -FMT
