Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has accused his predecessor Najib Abdul Razak of committing a slew of wrongdoings, forcing the authorities to pick and choose the cases on which to initiate legal proceedings.
“There are many charges against Najib, many wrong things that he has done.
“We have to choose which one we want to manage first. Already, there are two charges framed against him but there are many others.
“I'm quite sure that in time, we will, but investigations take a long time simply because sometimes we don't get the full cooperation of people who know the facts and sometimes it is difficult to get documents to back the allegations made,” Mahathir told a press conference in Petaling Jaya today.
He said this when asked if he was aware of the Attorney-General's Chamber's (AGC) “new information” that purportedly backs the allegation that Najib had paid RM9.5 million to lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah between 2013 and 2014.
Najib, who has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing, has been hauled to court twice to face a total of seven charges.
These are four charges of criminal breach of trust and abuse of power under Section 409 of the Penal Code and Section 23 of the MACC Act 2008, and three charges of money laundering under Section 4(1)(b) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.
Yesterday, Malaysiakini reported that the AGC had submitted an affidavit in the Court of Appeal that included bank transaction details of Najib’s and Shafee’s bank accounts.
The affidavit was made in response to PKR president-elect Anwar Ibrahim’s appeal at the court in relation to his sodomy conviction, for which he now has received a royal pardon.
Anwar had previously argued at the Kuala Lumpur High Court that he has been denied a fair trial because his prosecutor, Shafee, had received payment from his political rival Najib.
