PAKATAN Harapan’s transition plan for PKR president Anwar Ibrahim to step up as the next prime minister should not affect the political stability of the country, said Najib Razak.
Utusan Malaysia today reported that the former prime minister hopes the transition for the PKR president designate to take over the country’s helm will happen smoothly and there would not be any issues.
“We are not involved (in the transition) as it is with the PH government. We hope that the process will not affect political stability as the understanding is between them.
“If there is anything (issues), then it has to be asked of the two leaders. Whatever it is, we will wait and time will tell.”
PH component parties had agreed that Anwar would take over from Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad in about two years. However, rumours had surfaced that other leaders were being groomed for the office.
The question of who will succeed Dr Mahathir has been a point of contention between duelling factions in PKR, of which Anwar is soon to take over as president.
Najib said that when time comes, he would give his comments on the transition.
“We have been hearing a lot (about it) lately. Let’s wait and see what the next development is. I also know both leaders.”
PH made history on May 9 when it ousted Barisan Nasional from Putrajaya by winning 116 federal seats. It also has the support of Sabah’s Warisan, which has eight seats, and Upko, which has one federal seat.
BN won 79 seats but the number has since dropped to 54 after it lost its component partners from Sarawak and several Umno MPs, who turned independent.
