PAS distances Seri Setia candidate from remanded former rep

Selangor PAS chief Sallehen Mukhyi said the party's Seri Setia by-election candidate Dr Halimah Ali was not involved, following MACC's arrest of a party leader over alleged graft.
Yesterday, MACC arrested an unnamed former Selangor assemblyperson from PAS. She was brought to the Shah Alam magistrate court this morning and remanded for two days.
"It doesn't affect our Seri Setia candidate. The arrest is not an issue. It does not involve Halimah," he was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian.
Halimah was the two-term Selat Klang assemblyperson since 2008 but was defeated in the 14th general election.
PAS had fielded Halimah for the Seri Setia by-election, which will take place on Sept 8.
Sallehen stressed that the case was still at the investigation stage, adding that he left it to the wisdom of the MACC.
The former assemblyperson is being investigated under Section 23 of the MACC Act for allegedly abusing government funds amounting to RM50,000.
Section 23 of the MACC Act concerns the offence of using office or position for gratification.'
Meanwhile, Halimah questioned the timing of MACC's move, which is just four days away from the Seri Setia by-election.
"Why now?" she was quoted as saying by Berita Harian. "I hope MACC conducts its duty properly and in a professional manner and not based upon pressure," she added. - Mkini
