Turnout for Seri Setia and Balakong may be lower than Sg Kandis

PETALING JAYA: With two hours left till the ballot boxes close, it looks like voter turnout for the Seri Setia and Balakong by-elections will be lower than even the recently concluded Sungai Kandis polls.

According to the Election Commission (EC), as of 3pm, the turnout at the Seri Setia and Balakong by-election stood at a low of 38% and 35% respectively.

In comparison, the turnout for recently concluded Sungai Kandis by-election stood at 40% at 3pm on Aug 4. And by the time voting closed, only 49.8% out of 51,230 registered voters in Sg Kandis had cast their votes.

Deputy EC chairman Tan Sri Othman Mahmood, who had on Tuesday (Sept 4) set a target of 70% voter turnout for the two by-elections, is likely to be disappointed.

Political pundits had previously predicted a low voter turnout due to political fatigue as well as polling day falling on a long, three-day weekend.

The low turnout is in stark contrast to the early voting held for the Seri Setia polls on Sept 4, which saw 77% of those eligible exercising their right.

The early votes in Balakong saw 28 out of 31 police officers casting their ballots.

All polling centres will be officially closed at 5.30pm today (Sept 8).

Balakong has 62,219 registered voters, while Seri Setia has 50,692 registered voters. - Star
