Anwar: PAS accompanied me to temples during Pakatan Rakyat era

PD POLLS | Pakatan Harapan candidate for Port Dickson Anwar Ibrahim has responded to PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang for calling him "inconsistent" in his Muslim beliefs by pointing out that there were no complaints back when PAS was in Pakatan Rakyat.

"Last time when I went (to other places of worship), it was okay. Now, it is not," Anwar said at a press conference at the Pakatan Harapan by-election operations room in Port Dickson today.

During the Pakatan Rakyat era, he said he used to attend events on temple grounds accompanied by PAS members.

He said he did not join them in the prayer, but merely attended cultural programmes on the temple grounds.

"In the Islamic tradition, we respect the right to freedom of religion," he said.

Yesterday, Hadi had called Anwar inconsistent in his Islamic practise, claiming that Anwar would indulge in other religious practices when he was with the different communities.

"We live in a multiracial community. We respect the freedom to embrace any religion. But we must be consistent with our religion and our race.

"For example, he (Anwar) becomes an imam in the mosque, but in Sikh places (gurdwaras), he dresses up like a Sikh and in (Hindu temples), he dances according to Tamil tunes," Hadi said last night.
