Mais to continue enforcement action against all syariah crimes, including khalwat

PETALING JAYA: The Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais) says it will continue carrying out enforcement on complaints against all syariah crimes – including khalwat – through the Selangor Islamic Religious Department's (Jais) enforcement division.
Mais chairman Datuk Mohammed Khusrin Munawi (pic), in a statement on Monday (Oct 4), emphasised that the execution of syariah laws was under the state's jurisdiction, and clearly provided for in both the Federal Constitution and state legislation.
"Mais is always monitoring and ensuring that enforcement actions carried out are exactly to approved standard operating procedures and the laws in force," Mohammed Khusrin said in the statement.
Muslims in Selangor, the council stated, were advised against committing any offences enshrined in the Syariah Criminal Offences Enactment (Selangor) 1995.
.The religious council also urged all parties to give information relating to any syariah criminal acts taking place by contacting the Jais enforcement hotline at 1-800-88-2424.
Selangor is the second state, after Pahang, to reaffirm enforcement action against immoral activities such as khalwat.
On Sunday (Oct 7), the Regent of Pahang, Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, said the state will continue with anti-vice operations, including raids at residences and hotels, to prevent "immoral activities".
This follows a recent comment from Religious Minister Datuk Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa advising all agencies under him, especially the enforcement officers, to not interfere with the personal sphere.- Star
