Yoursay: Will Malaysia profit from ‘Billion Dollar Whale’ cash-in?

YOURSAY | ‘Authors and producers will likely see their cheques before M’sians see justice.’
Clever Voter: Turning the 1MDB scandal into a Hollywood movie gives little respect to the victim in this case, the future of Malaysia. Although Billion Dollar Whale authors Tom Wright and Bradley Hope have put together events and data into a readable paperback, there is no guarantee the contents truly reflect the accuracy.
The country has not even started the case let alone the charges. Wright, if all goes well will even collect his cheques even before the country will see the end of the case. This leads questions about the ethical aspect of what these individuals intend to do. Profits over justice perhaps.
The 1MDB scandal has brought shame and highlight the depth of the governance problems of the country. Such seriousness should not be overshadowed by a movie that will not add any advantage to anyone involved in the case.
Mahsuri: Who is making this movie is less of an issue; the bigger problem is that it has no conclusion to date. All of the court cases are just commencing.
Anonymous_f37de788: Wright and Hope, along with Ivanhoe Pictures and Michelle Yeoh can make their money from the film adaptation, no problem. But I will personally do everything in my power to boycott this movie through the little influence I have.
Anonymous_1371465729: The best way to show your disgust is to boycott the movie. Wright may have no issue with Yeoh producing the movie, but Malaysians I suspect will have a harder time accepting a supporter of former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak profiteering from their plight.
RM2.6 Billion Turkey Haram: Wright may have no problem with Yeoh, but more than half the population of Malaysia do. You have to be sensitive to the majority of the people here. You couldn’t care less about our feelings.
Most Malaysians were eagerly waiting to read your book, and many were not sure whether they could lay a hand on it before the change of government. We did, thank God, but you truly disappointed us when you announce that Yeoh would be co-producing the film adaptation.
VS-1965: We will all boycott the movie. As with the case of Sarawak Report editor Clare Rewcastle-Brown being uncredited for exposing the scandal, these are cowboys hijacking the work of others.
Fist and Furious: Although weathervane Yeoh may have moved away from supporting Najib in public, clearly she has learned an important lesson from him: cash is king.
Anonymous 2391793268077917: Of course, since Wright and Hope own the copyright of the book, he has the right to sell the film rights to anyone he chooses. We Malaysians also have the right to condemn his choice and boycott the movie.
No doubt Mahathir supported Najib, but when the 1MDB scam was exposed and he discovered how much damage his former protégé had done to the country and its people, he left Umno and challenged Najib for the sake of his fellow people of the country.
What has Yeoh done? She continued supporting Najib and urged Malaysians to support BN to give him a handsome win, and went quiet after the US Department of Justice DOJ called it "the worst kleptocracy in history." Only nitwits don't see the difference.
People Power: Lets boycott the Billion Dollar Whale film, and donate the money we would spend on the tickets to Sarawak Report instead.
Anonymous 2391793268077917: How familiar is the suggestion of "we should move on" when the 1MDB scam was condemned by the people. Had not the Umno ministers and their supporters told us that when the 1MDB scandal was exposed? No thanks. Only people of similar mindsets will agree to such suggestion.
Stupid Is As Stupid Does: Wright and Yeoh, have you heard of free downloads?
Anonymous 7478653098613829: Of course there is no legal agreement between Rewcastle-Brown and the authors of Billion Dollar Whale, Wright and Hope. Rewcastle-Brown was trying to use a major publication to expose the 1MDB scandal. She only said that the Wall Street Journal reporters should have given credit to her in their book. As the source of information, she has some right to say how the information should be used.
Furthermore, Rewcastle-Brown said that there are some bits of information that should not be published directly as the information will harm the informant. The WSJ writers can argue that the information they put out did not harm anyone, but that is just what they say. Do they actually know this or a fact?
Rewcastle-Brown strongly suspected that some people were arrested or harmed. I trust her more than the WSJ writers. Indeed, reading through the book, I also get the feeling that the book is written with the intent of making the story into a film. So much for exposing a crime.
On the other hand, Rewcastle-Brown’s passion for protecting Sarawak led her to stumble upon the 1MDB. She has sacrificed so much to pursue the issue which, everyone now knows, brought down the government of Malaysia under Umno.
Reading her book, we can tell any ordinary person would have given up the pursuit, as her own family was neglected for a number of years. She is an extraordinary person for being so determined to pursue a scandal.
For that, Malaysians should be grateful that she has unearthed a major scandal and we now have a new government. Without her exposé, many Malaysians would still be supporting BN.
The country would certainly be facing bankruptcy after the 14th general election as former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak has basically ruined the country with his reckless mismanagement and corruption.
I do hope that she will one day see justice done in Sarawak and the people who exploited the rainforests brought to justice. That was her original struggle. I have met Rewcastle-Brown at one of her book launches and she is just an ordinary woman who has the guts to take on a rogue government. We should salute her.
Anonymous 770241447347646: It has been Rewcastle-Brown from the beginning to the end. She put her life at risk exposing the so many scandals. She did it because she cared for this nation.
She did not ask anything in return, except for recognition for her contribution. The rest, including Wright and Hope, are in only for the publicity and the moolah that it can bring in. There is no sincerity or even any concern for this nation, but their own interests and agendas.
Rewcastle-Brown should be recognised for her work as well rewarded, for she had saved this nation from financial ruin.
Love Malaysia 2: Why would Rewcastle-Brown even lie about this? I remember right at the beginning when she reported on how she gave them access to her research, because she wanted a wider audience as her blog was banned in Malaysia. The source knows who did what. The truth will come out.
Annonymous: Compared to Rewcastle-Brown, Wright and Hope are just kids, they aren’t fit to lace her shoes. I think their book should be retitled Billion Dollar Whale: How a Homemaker Single-handedly Brought Down a Corrupt Regime.
Much credit must be given to Rewcastle-Brown's courageous, outstanding efforts, countless sacrifices and extraordinary achievement in helping to save Malaysia from certain disaster. - Mkini
