Be prepared for rakyat’s wrath if blacklist reimposed, PTPTN warned

The National Higher Education Fund (PTPTN) should be prepared to face the wrath of the people should it choose to reimpose a blacklist upon its loan defaulters, student activist Asheeq Ali Sethi Alivi has said.
“The proposal is as though PTPTN is a loan shark whose work is to choke the money out of the people.
“If PTPTN wishes to carry on with the restrictions, it must be prepared to face the rise and wrath of the rakyat.
“Be honest with the people. Don’t play with us, those who pay PTPTN,” he said when contacted by Malaysiakini last night.
He was referring to the consideration of a travel ban being reimposed upon PTPTN borrowers who default on payments.
PTPTN is seeking feedback on the proposal, one of several mooted to the corporation during discussions with stakeholders.
Eleborating further, Asheeq said PTPTN chairperson Wan Saiful Wan Jan should be more sensitive when making statements to the press.
The travel blacklist was lifted in June last year after the new Pakatan Harapan government entered office as the removal of PTPTN blacklist policy for defaulters was one of the coalition’s election promises.
It was clarified that the recent proposal did not originate from PTPTN and that nothing has been decided, with even PTPTN chairperson Wan Saiful Wan Jan stating yesterday that he, himself, was opposed to the idea of the ban.
‘Send Harapan to communications classes’
Despite the repeated assurances, however, PTPTN has come under fire over the matter, including by Harapan representatives. Youth and Sports Minister Seyd Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said he would oppose any such proposal brought to the cabinet.
“I think this is the real problem with Harapan, they should be sent to communications class.
“The communication problem among them is constant,” he said.
The student activist also urged the government to form a committee to study the issues concerning PTPTN.

He said it was time to stop polemicising the corporation as PTPTN handles billions of ringgit. - Mkini
