CJ stresses on independence in her first message

Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, in her first message following confirmation of her appointment as chief justice, reminded judicial commissioners to be independent and efficient in discharging their duties.
She was speaking to reporters after witnessing the swearing-in ceremony of 11 new judicial commissioners at the Palace of Justice in Putrajaya this evening.
Quizzed on her appointment, Tengku Maimun said she would speak about this after she is sworn in.
"It is their (judicial commissioners) day. What I want to say is congratulations (to them).
"They (judicial commissioners) must be reminded of their oath of office that they should deal with cases with independence, impartiality and efficiency.
"But anyway, all praise be to the Almighty," she added.
Yesterday, the Prime Minister's Office confirmed that Tengku Maimun would be the new chief justice after Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah assented to her appointment.
She is expected to be sworn in before the Agong next Monday.
Tengku Maimun, who is the country's first woman chief justice, replaces Richard Malanjum, who retired on April 12.
Her appointment was mired in controversy following reports of a stalemate between Putrajaya and the Conference of Rulers.
Singapore's Straits Times, quoting sources, claimed that the rulers were delaying giving the green light to send a message to Mahathir's administration that they are not mere rubber stamps.
The prime minister has been locking horns with the rulers, especially the Johor palace, on various issues. - Mkini
