PUTRAJAYA: After years of resisting calls for an independent oversight body, police today agreed to the establishment of the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC).
This followed the latest meeting between representatives of the police with the National Centre for Governance, Integrity and Anti-Corruption (GIACC), the Bar Council and the Attorney-General’s Chambers.
GIACC director-general Abu Kassim Mohamed said today’s meeting was attended by representatives of all sections of the police force.
He said the discussion touched on concerns raised by the police.
“We have explained to them that a lot of concerns of the police have been managed in the preparation of the Cabinet papers and in drafting the law to be presented to the government,” he told a press conference which was also attended by Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador.
The Cabinet last September agreed to form the IPCMC, a move which was opposed by former IGP Mohamad Fuzi Harun.
