Anwar Ibrahim has urged the government to consider giving some form of cash aid to Felda settlers ahead of this year’s Hari Raya festive season.
The chairperson for the Parliamentary Caucus on Reforms said this was discussed in the caucus’ meeting today.
“We understand the statement from the government, specifically (Economic Affairs Minister) Azmin Ali as to (financial) problems and discussions on (Felda’s) future.
“But we have been to the ground and the struggle is real. People are facing financial problems during Ramadan and the Raya season.
“So if they (the government) can consider giving just a bit, it would be fine, to lighten the burden of the Felda settlers.
“How much is up to them (the government),” Anwar told reporters after chairing the meeting at Parliament.
Azmin had previously said there would be no Hari Raya cash handouts for Felda settlers as the government intended to focus its resources on reviving Felda.
“As of now, we do not have (any plans to distribute Hari Raya allocations) because we want to channel money to cost of living loans and advance from yield schemes first.
“I met with Felda last week. We want to ensure that all the money is channelled (to these schemes) before Hari Raya,” Azmin had said last week.
The government had previously allocated RM2 billion for the two Felda schemes.
On the recent controversy generated by a Ramadan event organised by PKR Youth which saw him apologising on their behalf, Anwar said he accepted the explanation of those who organised it.
“We accept that it is a comprehensive programme, but I still advised them no extravagance,” he said in reference to criticisms that the event was carnival-like with singing and fireworks.
The organisers have denied that the programme was unsuitable for the holy month, saying it carried a theme of unity and moderation.
