Guan Eng supports decentralisation, but funds are lacking

Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng supports the idea of decentralising the government, but said there just aren't enough funds to pull this off at present.
"(For example) schools, the locals know what is the condition of these schools, the quality of education. So, shouldn't they be able to give input?
"Instead of everything being decided by an office one thousand miles away, where they may have not gone down to see what is the actual situation?
"So, I believe there should be decentralisation. But not now, because we don't have the funds and resources to do so," Lim said in a joint interview at Putrajaya recently.
He said decentralisation can only be carried out when there is enough revenue to do so.
Thus, he said, it is currently more important to improve the country's economy and fiscal position rather than talk about decentralisation.
Decentralisation is a concept where authority and functions are disbursed to smaller areas, such as to a state, instead of being focused on a centralised area such as Putrajaya.
Proponents of decentralisation argue that, among others, decentralisation empowers local communities more to decide on policy matters that will directly affect them. - Mkini
