KOTA KINABALU: The government should urgently look into issues of Sabah's illegal immigrants and stateless persons in the aftermath of the murder of a Grab car driver recently, says Kota Marudu PKR division chief Sazalye Donol.
He said the murder, which was believed to be committed by an illegal immigrant, should be enough to really wake up the authorities.
"The government cannot delay and must take drastic action to solve this flood of illegal immigrants into Sabah," he said Thursday (May 30).
Grab car driver Mohd Hanafiee Jaffar, 27, was believed killed over RM80 in a robbery on May 24.
He was believed to have picked up two suspects at about 4am and was supposed to take them to Tuaran as requested in the e-hailing app.
Hanafiee never returned home after the trip.
The two suspects were nabbed on May 27 and are being investigated for murder.
Sazalye said the influx of illegal immigrants had contributed to increasing crimes in Sabah.
"We also hope the police will be able to probe this matter thoroughly to ensure that the killers will not run free," said the organiser secretary of Sabah PKR.
Social media users have also condemned the act and called for swift prosecution after photos of the suspects went viral on the Internet.
People are also going online to urge the government to deport all illegal immigrants and to beef up security at all known entry points in Sabah.
Many have also asked the government to solve the issue of stateless people in Sabah.- Star
