Immigration Dept urged to act against foreigners peddling at Jonker Walk

MELAKA: The Immigration Department should act against foreigners peddling ornamental items and paintings at Jonker Walk, says a Melaka exco member.
According to State Housing, Local Government and Environment Committee chairman Datuk Tey Kok Kiew, enforcement officers from the Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB) had acted against these foreigners on a few occasions, but they kept returning as business was brisk.
"Only the Immigration Department has the power to check if these foreigners have violated their social visit passes," he said Saturday (May 11).
Tey said the foreigners had been sighted at Jonker Walk on a few occasions and continued to defy the advice from MBMB not to peddle items at the iconic Jonker Walk.
He said foreigners begging on the streets were also rampant in Melaka.
Meanwhile, a hotelier shared a video of her manager getting into an altercation with a few foreigners when he asked them to stop peddling souvenirs.
In her message to The Star, the hotelier said the foreigners were very aggressive towards her superior and even threatened to seize his smartphone, which was used to record them.- Star
