GEORGE TOWN: Education Minister Maszlee Malik today praised a Tamil school here for being eco-warriors and having a sustainable environment, calling on other schools to follow in their footsteps.
During his visit to SJK (T) Sungai Ara today, he was surprised to hear feedback from parents who said the pupils refused to go back home as they were having fun studying in school.
Maszlee said there was also an Islamic school next to the Tamil school and they often conducted joint activities together.
“It is amazing. Not only has the school met eight of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals but has also made learning fun through the use of technology.
“They are also very close to the sekolah agama next door, upholding our aspirations for a harmonious country.
“The ministry regards this school as a role model for other schools in the country, with focus on happiness, love and respect in an education system,” he said.
Maszlee lauded headmaster Sangga Sinniah and the 20 teachers of the school for creating an excellent environment for the pupils to study and for making the country proud.
The pupils, numbering some 300, are actively involved in various projects, including organic farming on an idle strip of river reserve land next to the school. The farm earns the school over RM600 a month.
Despite these extra-curricular activities, the school has emerged one of the top-tier schools in terms of academic results in the state, with a passing rate of 86% last year.
Maszlee announced a RM20,000 ministry grant to help the school’s eco-initiatives and maintenance, while the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka and the National Translation Institute donated books worth RM4,000 to the school’s library. -FMT
