Penang expects city status for Seberang Perai soon

The Seberang Perai Municipal Council headquarters in Bukit Mertajam, Penang.
GEORGE TOWN: A Penang government official today revealed that the Seberang Perai Municipal Council (MPSP) will likely be elevated to city council soon, as the state’s proposal has reached the federal Cabinet.
State Local Government committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo said the proposal was sent to the housing and local government ministry last December, with indications that it would likely be granted.
He said once elevated, Seberang Perai would become the country’s largest city council, covering 747.8 sq km with a population of 946,200.
“The Penang government approved MPSP’s application last December and wrote to the housing and local government minister to have it elevated to city status.
“Under the past administration, we were told that a state should not have more than one city council. We felt that was unfair as there were many states with more than one city council, but the new government said we could.
“We are inching towards the final leg and we look forward to the elevation of Seberang Perai as a city. Next week, we will likely hear good news,” Jagdeep said at a meeting with MPSP today.

MPSP is the largest municipality in the country, administering three main districts with 54 localities. - FMT
