How the public perceives the Malays is tied to how they perceive Umno, said the party's acting president Mohamad Hasan.
As such, he said, Umno must be mindful of how to act and speak.
"Protecting the good name of Umno means protecting the good name of the Malays. Anything bad about Umno will reflect on the Malays. So be careful in your actions and speech," he said.
Mohamad was speaking at Umno's 73rd-anniversary celebration at the Putra World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur today.
Among those in attendance were Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, the sitting president who is on leave, as well as former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak.
PAS leaders were also present, namely Ulama wing chief Dr Mahfodz Mohamed, secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan and party information chief Nasruddin Hasan.
This is Umno's second anniversary since losing federal power last year. After its defeat at the 14th general election, there were calls for the party to reform itself and present a more inclusive message.
However, in his speech tonight, Mohamad said Umno must hold steadfast to its Malay Muslim agenda.
"Umno must uphold Malay Muslim politics for its continuity. The best example is the unity agenda between Umno and PAS," he said. - Mkini
