KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians must do their part in helping the government protect and preserve national unity and harmony, Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo said today.
Speaking at the national Vaisakhi celebrations here, he said Malaysia’s diversity must be protected and strengthened to ensure a brighter and more prosperous future for Malaysians.
“We cannot slack in our efforts to protect multiculturalism, multiracialism and the various religions, as well as inculcate noble values in our diversified society. The uniqueness of our society is very special, and is a source of attraction to people around the world,” he said.
He reminded Malaysians that the onus was on them to stop and prevent anyone from jeopardising national unity and harmony.

Gobind said there were many threats and challenges being faced in cyberspace, not just in Malaysia but globally.
The federal government was committed towards tackling issues and problems that are bound to negatively impact the nation.
The government supported media freedom but this did not mean that fake news and defamatory statements could be spread maliciously to divide Malaysians.
Gobind said Vaisakhi, like other national festivals, was also a showcase of Malaysia’s multiracial society.
Vaisakhi, a traditional harvest festival celebrated by Sikh devotees, marks the start of a new year and a new harvest season. Guests at tonight’s celebrations were feted with a performance by DJ Dave, a popular singer in the 1970s. He belted out two of his songs, namely “Ingin Bersua” and “Menjelang Hari Raya”. - FMT
