Speak up on land matters, pressure group urges KL MPs

The Taman Rimba Kiara development project has been a bone of contention for residents in the area.
PETALING JAYA: Pressure group Selamatkan Kuala Lumpur (SKL) has accused Kuala Lumpur MPs from the ruling coalition of staying mum on land-related matters affecting their respective constituencies.
SKL deputy chairman M Ali said aside from Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh, who has been vocal on the Taman Rimba Kiara development project and concerns over conflict of interest on the part of Yayasan Wilayah Persekutuan (YWP), other MPs have not been forthcoming.
“Where are the MPs of Kuala Lumpur with their concerns about fundamental issues affecting some sectors of city dwellers?
“We have yet to hear or see their reactions. Why have all these MPs gone dead silent?”
He also claimed MPs from Pakatan Harapan had remained silent when the federal territories ministry endorsed Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s (DBKL) move to appeal the court judgment in the Taman Tiara Titiwangsa case.
In 2017, residents of Taman Tiara Titiwangsa filed for a judicial review on the validity of a public objection hearing conducted by DBKL for a high-density project on YWP land.
They said they were unable to present their case in a “meaningful” way under Rule 5 of the Federal Territory Planning Act 1982, which is designed to allow public participation in areas of planning and development control.
In March, the Court of Appeal declared the hearing null and void. DBKL appeal against the decision the following month.
Ali also said reforms to DBKL’s enforcement department have been slow in coming.
“Not only in traffic management, but building controls, hawker management, unlicensed nurseries and kindergartens, illegal commercial activities at residential premises, intrusion and the abuse of residential premises for purposes other than dwelling,” he said.
“It’s high time the people were given a clear explanation of the above matters.”
Taman Desa Residents’ Association representative Frank Yeh agreed, saying prior to the May 9 polls, promises were made that land matters pertaining to overdevelopment and rezoning would be reviewed.
He spoke of a development project in the area which he said was slated to be built on land designated for a playground.
He also cited a court case on another project known as The Address which comprises three condominium blocks being constructed on a parcel of land originally earmarked as a Tenaga Nasional Bhd reserve.
He claimed DBKL had promised to halt the project but that work was continuing nonetheless.
The Taman Desa residents had filed for a judicial review of the project but this was dismissed by the court in August last year.
An appeal submitted in October is scheduled for hearing in July. - FMT
