JOHOR BARU: Two schools near a rubber and plastic storage warehouse in Jalan Ayer Hitam, Senai, were ordered to close and switch to home-based teaching and learning (PdPR) yesterday following a massive fire.
The closure affects Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKC) Sengkang and SJKC Kulai Besar.
State Education and Information Committee chairman Aznan Tamin said the decision followed a safety assessment by the Kulai district health office.
"The closure follows advice from health officials after air quality monitoring revealed smoke and burning odours that could harm the school community," he said in a statement today.
SJKC Sengkang has 178 students, 16 teachers, and three support staff, while SJKC Kulai Besar has 1,353 students, 71 teachers, and five support staff.
Both schools have been instructed to implement PdPR in accordance with official guidelines.
Aznan urged the public not to spread unverified information that could cause panic.
Meanwhile, firefighters continue to battle the blaze at the 13,000sq m warehouse.
As of 12pm today, about 65 per cent of the fire has been extinguished. - NST
