MACC RCI matter of restoring public trust, not solely about Azam

YOURSAY | 'Any bid to wait it out until Azam retires will deepen public suspicion.'

'RCI on MACC must be established whether Azam retires or not'

Emkay Emkay: A royal commission of Inquiry (RCI) into the MACC must be established immediately and should not be delayed or diluted simply because its chief Azam Baki is approaching retirement.

The core issue is not the individual but the integrity, accountability, and public confidence in MACC as an institution.

For that reason, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim should move swiftly to establish an independent and credible RCI with clear and transparent terms of reference to thoroughly investigate all allegations and structural weaknesses linked to MACC.

Any attempt to “wait it out” until Azam retires, or to quietly close the chapter once he leaves office, would only deepen public suspicion that the government is more concerned with managing optics than upholding genuine institutional reform.

The PM came to power on a platform of reform and good governance. Postponing or avoiding an RCI would contradict those promises and further erode trust among reform-minded Malaysians.

A prompt RCI would signal that no one, regardless of rank or retirement status, is above scrutiny, and that institutional reforms will not be sacrificed for political convenience.

In short, the government must ensure that the RCI on MACC is established without delay and that it proceeds, whether Azam stays, retires, or is replaced.

Apanama is back: The Madani government may not establish an RCI on the “corporate mafia” allegation.

This has nothing to do with the outcome of the “sure to be no further action” probe by a sandiwara (theatre) task force or the so‑called “guling kerajaan” (topple the government) police investigation.

How to stop this RCI on MACC? Let me count the ways.

  1. The probe on shareholding will exonerate the “brave guy.”

  2. The “brave guy” will be retired by not extending his tenure for the fourth time.

  3. The Bloomberg report will somehow be linked to “guling kerajaan.” They are still trying to delay the timeline so that the RCI can be further postponed.

One can add more fairy tales to the list of reasons to not establish the RCI .

Coward: PM was not silent. Yes, he did not literally speak, but I believe this is not a leak, it is a plant. It is the man himself speaking without speaking, because doing so openly would cause him to lose too much face.

He is offering what he thinks is an olive branch, and we must decide whether to accept it. A leak or a plant like this means one thing: he is testing the waters before committing.

On his own, Azam will not resign. It's too humiliating after what he and his boss said. Not only that, but it will also embolden people who want to pursue his case.

According to the Straits Times report, Anwar was floating this as a compromise. I am not prepared to accept because I don't have to. In fact, I dare Anwar to reappoint him and face the music.

While this reflects his bottom line and is more or less what we expected him to offer, I am not prepared to accept it. This was always his card to “settle” the issue. But this is not a compromise I can accept. If it were, I would not care if people said I played into his script. The objective matters more than the method.

But my opinion does not matter much. The crucial opinion that does matter is DAP’s.

If DAP rejects this, be prepared for another round of political sandiwara, where a new decision will be presented to us and dressed up as a PKR decision. Also, do not be surprised if Nurul Izzah Anwar gets another five minutes of fame.

If DAP accepts this, then we must decide whether this means DAP has compromised its position and respond accordingly.

Unsubbed_wallace: Just because someone retires does not absolve them from breaking the law. Malaysia is well and truly suffering from a standards deficit.

Low quality MPs at the helm of this nation have really put Malaysia on the map as some sad, corrupted, mismanaged cesspool of incompetence.

It is shameful for those who care how they are perceived internationally, not so for village folk who live in bubbles.

Gomen Censoring Me: Why is Anwar so protective of Azam? Azam seems to have an inexplicable hold over Anwar, compelling him to defend Azam even when the facts appear obvious. Is he holding some dark secret or damaging information about Anwar or his family?

It is time for NGOs such as Bersih to investigate whether this is what makes Azam appear to be the most powerful person in Malaysia, supported by the country’s highest office holder. - Mkini
