The everyday heroes who made a difference through kindness

From a woman who bought a stranger a meal to FMT readers who came together for a child in need, here are stories of compassion that unites Malaysians.

PETALING JAYA:
Amidst the bad news that often dominates headlines and social media feeds, stories of kindness offer a reminder of what truly matters.

Across the country, ordinary people have been making a difference, often without fanfare. Although simple, these acts of compassion show how kindness can ripple far beyond a single moment – reflecting Malaysia at its best.

Here are six recent heartwarming moments that have touched many.

1. The woman who turned compassion into action

Senator Dr RA Lingeshwaran recently shared a heartwarming incident he witnessed at a coffee outlet in Penang.

“There was a Chinese man going from table to table. When he came to me, I gave him a small amount of money. Then a young Malay woman offered to buy him food and a drink,” he told FMT Lifestyle.

The woman, Siti Zulaiqha Hamzah, accompanied the man to the counter, invited him to choose what he wanted, and quietly paid the bill.

“It really touched my heart. It reminded me that unity is still alive and that caring Malaysians still exist,” Lingeshwaran said.

“What she did may seem like a small act, but it reflected something much bigger: kindness.”

2. The teacher who went the extra mile

Over 20 years ago, TikTok user Ain Ahmad struggled to pay her Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) fees.

When her teacher Koay Aun Chuan asked her about the payment, she told him she had planned to pawn some belongings, but the pawn shop was closed.

Concerned, Koay stepped in to help her secure financial assistance. He also reimbursed her when she paid for books or other school expenses, while encouraging her to study hard and reminding her that education could change her life.

Today, she is a policewoman – and she recently reunited with Koay after finally tracking him down, in a touching reminder that an act of kindness can be remembered for decades.

3. The man who ran towards the flames

As flames engulfed a house in Taman Ehsan, Kepong in the early hours of April 30, one man ran towards the danger.

The man, who wished only to be known as Harvison, sprung into action when he realised the elderly couple living there were still inside their home, the New Straits Times reported.

With the help of a neighbour, Harvison rushed in and helped them escape. Sadly, the blaze was too intense and he was unable to rescue their disabled son, who was trapped in a bedroom.

Still, his brave actions saved two lives, serving as a powerful reminder that courage and compassion can shine even in the darkest moments.

4. The Grab rider who stopped to help

TikTok user @ochulaah shared an encounter involving a Grab rider and an elderly man in a wheelchair.

In the video, the rider stopped to help the man, who was struggling to move his wheelchair from the road onto the pavement. He then wheeled him to a shaded spot and chatted with him before continuing on his way.

The clip has since garnered 1.5 million views.

The rider said he never expected his simple gesture to go viral; he’d stopped because the elderly man reminded him of his father.

5. The late-night motorcycle repair that became an act of compassion

A roadside motorcycle repair turned into an act of kindness when a mechanic waived his fee after noticing a stranded customer’s limited funds.

The incident, which took place after midnight, was shared on TikTok by the mechanic, who had been called out to fix a broken chain and replace a missing sprocket.

After completing the repair which cost RM145, the mechanic noticed the customer only had RM176 left in his e-wallet.

Concerned about whether the man would have enough money for food, he refused to accept payment despite the customer’s insistence.

“Today I help you in your time of need. If I need help in the future, others will help me too,” he said, in a gesture that moved the customer to tears and earned widespread praise online.

6. The Malaysians who rallied behind a single mother’s fight

Time and again, Malaysians have shown their generosity whenever FMT puts out a fundraising appeal.

Last month, single mother S Kogila Vani needed RM78,000 for a specialised implant to help her nine-year-old daughter, Yaashika Steven Dass, breathe normally through her nose.

Within 72 hours, FMT readers contributed the full amount.

“Malaysians from every background – Malay, Chinese and Indian – rallied behind my cause,” Kogila told FMT. “The response was swift and overwhelming. Readers did not see a stranger in need but a fellow Malaysian, a mother fighting for her child.

“I am deeply touched. It’s not just the money but also the faith and hope they have restored. This shows that compassion knows no ethnicity.” - FMT
