PETALING JAYA:

A premises at Pusat Perdagangan Lagoon Perdana here was raided on Thursday in a joint enforcement operation led by the Selangor Islamic religious department (Jais) for suspected hosting of Shia activities.

The Islamic authority raided the premises following a tip-off.

It was assisted by the police, fire and rescue department, immigration department, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, and Subang Jaya city council (MBSJ).

One hundred and twenty personnel were involved in the raid.

During the operation, authorities found 226 individuals at the premises – 147 men, 51 women and 28 children. All of them are foreign nationals from Pakistan, India and Bangladesh.

Jais said it took action under the Shariah Criminal Offences (Selangor) Enactment 1995 for various offences, including insulting religious authorities, and disseminating opinions and publications that contravene fatwas and Islamic law.

Meanwhile, MBSJ issued a notice against the premises for non-compliance that included modifying the premises without approval from local authorities. The owner was given 14 days to comply with the requirements of the notice.

Jais urged members of the public with any information on Shia teachings to channel it to the department’s hotline at 1800-88-2424 so that appropriate action can be taken.

It advised Muslims not to be involved in any activities related to such teachings. - FMT
