The appointments come after the national footballing body and seven naturalised Malaysian footballers were penalised by Fifa last year for submitting falsified birth certificates.
FAM’s executive committee also appointed Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) director-general Shuhaily Zain as the committee’s deputy chairman.
Ayob retired from the police force in July after 35 years of service. He previously gained national and international recognition while heading the Bukit Aman counter-terrorism division from 2016 to 2020, where he became known for dismantling militant cells and thwarting terror plots.
Shuhaily headed Bukit Aman’s criminal investigation department for about two years before his transfer to AKPS in June last year.
Their appointments come after a forgery case involving seven naturalised Harimau Malaya players created global headlines last year.
FAM and the seven players were penalised by Fifa last year after the world football body said the national footballing body had submitted falsified birth certificates to confirm the players’ eligibility before Malaysia’s 2027 Asian Cup qualifier against Vietnam last June.
In a statement today, FAM president Ab Ghani Hassan, who chaired FAM’s executive committee meeting for the first time, also announced that Noor Azman Rahman would remain as FAM secretary-general while Ismail Karim would continue as FAM treasurer.
He also announced the chairmen and deputy chairmen of the 10 other FAM committees for the remainder of the 2025-2029 term.
Ghani, who was elected FAM president for the remainder of the 2025-2029 term on Sept 17, will chair the finance and management committee and the national football team management committee.
The election was held seven months after FAM’s entire leadership stepped down after an AFC governance review triggered by the scandal involving the naturalised players. - FMT
