Multi-lane fast flow system won’t be rushed, says minister

 Works minister Alexander Nanta Linggi says highway concessionaires and other interested parties will be given time to work together to develop the concept.

Under the MLFF system, all exit and entry points on highways will be converted into barrier-free lanes to reduce congestion and ease traffic flow.

Stakeholders have been given more time to finalise arrangements to implement the multi-lane free flow (MLFF) toll system, says works minister Alexander Nanta Linggi.

Nanta said the system’s implementation would follow a business-to-business (B2B) model, with highway concessionaires and other interested parties working together to develop it, Bernama reported.

He said the approach would allow interested parties, particularly highway concessionaires which own the highways and related assets, to negotiate among themselves.

“We don’t want to rush this. The people interested in implementing this system must talk with each other, especially the concessionaires,” he said at a press conference after the opening ceremony of the MyAsean Road and Traffic Tech Expo 2026 in Kuala Lumpur.

“We have given them a timeline. They just need a little bit more time. All this is still under negotiation.”

Nanta said the Association of Highway Concessionaires Malaysia plays a key role in facilitating negotiations between concessionaires and other parties interested in investing in the system.

Works ministry secretary-general Azman Ibrahim previously said the MLFF system may only be implemented in 2027 at the earliest.

Under the system, all exit and entry points on highways will be converted into barrier-free lanes to reduce congestion and ease traffic flow.

The system is part of the Malaysian ITS Blueprint (2019-2023) designed to modernise the country’s highway infrastructure. - FMT
