GE14 | MCA publicity spokesperson Ti Lian Ker's dismissal of Pakatan Harapan's manifesto, on the grounds that the word "Cina" (Chinese) doesn't appear enough, is symptomatic of MCA's own racism, said two DAP Youth leaders today.
In a statement today, DAP Youth spokesperson Muhammad Shakir Ameer Mohideen said by combing the document for the word "Cina" and not actually reading it, Ti failed to grasp that the coalition’s pledges benefited the Chinese community.
"For example, (we pledge to) upgrade new villages and fishing villages... with a budget of RM60 million annually compared to RM20 million (currently)... despite MCA and Gerakan being in the government.
"We have also pledged to ensure UEC (Unified Examination Certificate) gets recognised for entrance into local universities. This is something that MCA couldn't even push despite being in the government for several decades," said Muhammad Shakir.
Yesterday, Ti accused DAP of being subservient to Bersatu's "ethnocentric policies" because Harapan's manifesto had only mentioned "Chinese" five times, while the there were far more mentions of "bumiputera", "Malays", "Indians" and "Orang Asli".
"In total, ‘pribumi’ was mentioned 60 times and the Indians mentioned about 10 times more than the Chinese in the Harapan manifesto," said Ti.
Muhammad Shakir said Harapan's policies offered socioeconomic and structural reforms which benefit all Malaysians.
"If MCA assumes the level commitment to the Chinese community is based on the number of times the word 'Cina' appears on a manifesto, then maybe it is time for MCA to be prepared to assume the role of national opposition together with the entire BN, as they lack commonsense despite being in the position of power," he said.
Meanwhile, Johor DAP spokesperson Sheikh Omar Ali (photo) said it was disappointing that MCA was fixated on the word "Cina" and could not present coherent policy arguments.
"I can accept if MCA criticises our pledges with better proposals in a constructive manner.
"Idea lawan idea lah! (Fight ideas with ideas please!)," he said in a statement today. - Mkini
