KUALA LUMPUR: Tourism and Culture Minister Mohamed Nazri Aziz has welcomed the challenge from PKR to contest the Padang Rengas parliament seat in the 14th general election.
He said PKR had “always been confident, since 1999”.
The Padang Rengas MP was responding to an FMT report quoting Padang Rengas PKR chief Alias Ibrahim as saying that Pakatan Harapan’s chances in the parliamentary seat in Perak were bright for two reasons.
These were disaffection among voters over the rising cost of living and the split in the Malay vote between PAS and Umno.
“It’s okay, no problem. When you enter a boxing ring you have to be confident.
“If you enter thinking you are going to lose but just give it a good fight, there is no way you are going to win,” Nazri said at a press conference today.
Alias had voiced confidence in the continued support of non-Malays for the opposition.
“With the support of Chinese and Indian voters, there is a good chance that Pakatan will also win in Cenderoh and Lubok Merbau, the two state seats under Padang Rengas,” Alias had said.
On the matter of non-Malay support, Nazri said his hard work on the ground will speak for itself.
“I do not know what is going to happen in the future but I work hard for all voters, regardless of race, creed and beliefs,” Nazri said.
There are an estimated 30,000 voters in Padang Rengas, with Malays accounting for 77.8%, Chinese 14.5%, Indians 6.3% and others 1.1%.
Nazri has seen his vote majority gradually decrease in straight fights against PKR candidates over the past three general elections.
Meanwhile, Nazri laughed off reports that PPBM chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad was willing to stand in GE14 under a DAP ticket.
When asked about such a scenario, he just carried on laughing, before pausing for a moment to say: “That’s my comment.”
Previously, Nazri had invited Mahathir to contest against him in Padang Rengas.
The seat is expected to see a three-way fight in GE14 as PAS are likely to enter the fray. -FMT
