It is a hurdle finding a federal seat for former Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah to contest in the coming general election, PKR Wanita chief Zuraida Kamaruddin said.
The party has yet to reach a decision due to the uncertainty of the redelineation exercise by the Election Commission (EC), she said.
The Ampang MP was asked how PKR could accommodate Maria when PKR may not have enough urban seats.
While Maria announced on March 6 that she has quit Bersih to contest as an Independent candidate aligned to Pakatan Harapan, many speculate that she may rely on PKR and contest in Petaling Jaya Selatan, Pandan or Batu.
Zuraida said they can only decide where to place Maria after the EC's proposal on its constituency redelineation is finalised.
The redelineation proposal is slated to be tabled in the current parliamentary session, which ends on April 5.
Concerns have been raised about the possibility of the government tabling the original redelineation proposal released in Sept 2016, instead of the amended redelineation proposal released two months ago.
Zuraida (photo) concurred that Maria would fit in an urban or semi-urban seat, citing Selangor as an urban state.
Candidates to be reviewed
Elaborating further, she said the party would review the performance of the incumbent lawmakers to ensure the candidates have a good chance of winning, even it they were challenged by BN and PAS in multi-cornered fights.
She also hoped Maria would eventually decide to join PKR as a member.
Regardless, the party is open Maria contesting under PKR's ticket as an Independent, she said, and it would be discussing the matter.
"We take it one thing at a time. Maria has taken the first step to take part in the election. (Later) she can decide which party she wants to be attached to," Zuraida added. -Mkini
