MUAR – Big guns in Pakatan Harapan will not sway Johor voters from Barisan Nasional (BN) to the opposition, according to Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein.
The caretaker Defence Minister said he was unfazed by the prospect of facing popular opposition pair of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman in the Johor.
He said this was because the people of Johor have always placed the struggle of the party and what it had done for them above everything else.
“Even since the time of my grandfather (Umno founder) Datuk Onn Jaafar, we (Johor) have never placed priority on any individual. He had to leave Umno in Johor, so had (former deputy prime minister) Tun Musa Hitam,” he said after attending a BN programme at the Muar Umno headquarters, here, today.
“Because we in Johor hold on the principle of continued struggle. This is how we are raised, and this is why (opposition) personalities in Johor will not sway voters here.”
Onn founded Umno in May 1946 but left the party in August 1951, citing dissatisfaction over the party’s race-based policies, while Musa left Umno after the party crisis in 1987.
Johor, however, has remained undefeated under BN despite both personalities being born and raised in the state.
Hishammuddin said this proved that the Johor people were loyalists and would put the party on the forefront, despite being tested time and again.
“So Muhyiddin and the others can pair up all they like, but history in the past has shown that we in Johor have and will always put the party and its struggle as the priority,” he said.
MUAR: Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein has warned the people of Muar not to let an outsider from Pakatan Harapan (PH) fool them, labelling the opposition’s candidate here as an “anak kucing” (kitten) and “setahun jagung” (greenhorn).
Although the Umno vice-president did not name anyone, he was referring to PPBM Youth chief Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman (pix), who is the PH candidate for the Muar constituency.
Hishammuddin said Barisan Nasional (BN) should not be afraid of the prospect of facing Syed Saddiq, who will be contesting in his first General Election, as the latter was clueless on the issues faced by the people of Muar.
“He’s not a red lion, he’s just a red kitten. And this kitten doesn’t know the issues in Muar, because he has never come down here. He can’t influence the adult voters here.
“He also tries to be close with the youth here because he doesn’t know what BN has done for Muar. We focus on Muar issues, and we have served here for so long.
“So don’t let a kid who is just setahun jagung politic in Muar and teach us what to do,” he said in his speech during a visit to the Muar Umno headquarters, here, today.
Hishammuddin said this must not be allowed to happen as Muar is still a BN stronghold, and that the BN machinery here should go all out to ensure a victory in the polls on May 9.
The Muar parliamentary seat is set to see a three-cornered fight with Syed Saddiq taking on BN’s Datuk Seri Razali Ibrahim (who is the incumbent MP), and Abdul Aziz Talib of PAS.
