PETALING JAYA: Close monitoring by police at a Pakatan Harapan event at USJ 19, Subang Jaya on Saturday night probably averted an untoward incident when a man who showed up with a parang was arrested by detectives.
The suspect who is in his early 20’s had arrived at the meet-and-greet event at Jalan USJ 19/4 carrying an almost 60cm-long parang that was wrapped in a cloth before joining thousands of others who attended the political talk by Subang parliamentary candidate Wong Chen and Subang Jaya candidate Michelle Ng Mei Sze at 8pm.
Sources said minutes later police detectives on duty became suspicious on spotting the man carrying the long object.
After several minutes of keeping watch on the suspect, the detectives approached the suspect and arrested him on finding a machete in his possession.
He was taken into custody and a remand order was obtained today to detain him for further investigations.
Sources said initial investigations showed that the man had driven alone to the event and is believed to be mentally unsound.
Investigations are ongoing to determine his motive of carrying a machete to the event.
The ceramah ended with no untoward incidents.
