Former PKR deputy president Syed Husin Ali has questioned the delay in PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim's release.
"Why was the Pardons Board meeting on Anwar's release delayed?
"Was the pardon based on the (Yang di-Pertuan) Agong's initiative without the prime minister's acknowledgement? Or were there other reasons?" he tweeted.
Earlier, it was announced that the Pardons Board meeting on Awar would be held on Wednesday contrary to earlier reports that it would be held tomorrow.
PKR communications chief Fahmi Fadzil said the party was informed of the matter by the Prime Minister’s Department.
“As such, any programmes related to Anwar's release are postponed until further notice,” he said in a statement earlier.
Anwar is currently recovering from an operation at the Cheras Rehabilitation Hospital in Kuala Lumpur.
He is serving a five-prison sentence and is scheduled to be released on June 8.
Pakatan Harapan has campaigned for Anwar's immediate release as well as a royal pardon, which would allow him to return to active politics with immediate effect.
Earlier today, Anwar’s daughter and Permatang Pauh MP Nurul Izzah said her father's lawyers informed that the Pardons Board would meet at 5pm tomorrow.
Following this, Fahmi announced the meeting had been brought forward to 11am tomorrow, and urged supporters to gather outside the hospital to welcome Anwar.
The party also circulated a poster promoting a rally in Petaling Jaya at 3pm tomorrow in conjunction with Anwar's release.
Shortly after, Mahathir told reporters there might be a slight delay in the pardon process.
“On our promise to get a pardon for Anwar, it will continue, but the process will be followed.
“Even though it has been agreed, the Pardons Board meet might be slightly delayed because we want to follow the rules,” he said. -Mkini
