UMNO has delayed announcing the final list of candidates contesting the party elections until Wednesday as it is still vetting them.
The announcement today was highly anticipated but the party’s chief secretary of divisions, Azwan Aziz, told the media the final list would only be ready in two days.
“This is not the finalised list. You would need to wait at least until Wednesday.
“We need to assess the credit status of the candidates as clause 9A of the Societies Act of 1966 forbids bankrupts from holding any post in the party,” said Azwan at the party headquarters today where candidates were given their slot numbers.
Nominations for the top office-bearers and Supreme Council posts closed at 5pm yesterday but the high number of candidates led to delays in the final list of contestants, which was supposed to be out today.
Voting for the top office-bearers will be held on June 30 and for the wing chiefs (Youth, Wanita and Puteri) on June 23.
The party elections are held this year after two postponements. The last polls were in 2013.
Following Umno’s defeat at the 14th general election, these polls will see an unprecedented number of candidates vying for posts, breaking the party’s long-standing culture of no-contests in the name of stability as members seek new leadership.
Among the candidates announced today were:
