A storm wreaked havoc last night in several areas of Kuala Terengganu, uprooting trees and damaging Ramadan bazaar canopies.
No one was reported injured in the incident which occurred at about 9pm.
The Terengganu Civil Defence Force received several reports of damage to Ramadan bazaar canopies and other traders’ facilities in the city and a blown-off canopy that obstructed road users in Batu Buruk.
Its director, Che Adam A Rahman, said today traders’ canopies in Dataran Shahbandar were also blown off.
The operations room of the force also received reports of two cases of uprooted trees in Kampung Atas Tol which hampered road users, he told Bernama.
Che Adam advised people living on the coast to exercise caution. He said the storm was caused by a drastic change in the weather due to the advent of the Southwest Monsoon on May 31.
“According to the Meteorological Department, strong winds are expected to prevail over the next two or three days from the evening to the night. Rain has been forecast until Aidilfitri,” he said.
Meanwhile, Kuala Terengganu mayor Samiun Salleh said he would find out the damage suffered by the traders in Pasarnita near Tanjung today.
"Officers from the Kuala Terengganu City Council will also assess the damage at the trading sites in Dataran Batu Buruk and Dataran Shahbandar and provide the necessary aid,” he said.
