Attorney-general Tommy Thomas denied a news report claiming that he has resigned, which sent shockwaves.
“Totally untrue!” he told Malaysiakini this afternoon.
Thomas was responding to an FMT report which quoted a government source confirming his resignation.
“The shock resignation comes more than three months after his appointment to the post.
“It also comes on the back of criticism against the Attorney-General’s Chambers for dropping the corruption charges against Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng over the purchase of a bungalow for below-market price,” read the report.
The report, published at 1.19pm, has since been removed.
At 1.45pm, FMT published an apology over the report.
“The story was based on sources who have since retracted
their confirmation. We therefore withdraw the report unconditionally and apologise to the attorney-general,” said the news portal.Thomas was appointed as attorney-general on June 4, 2018.
During his time as a lawyer, Thomas had represented various quarters in public interest issues, including the Kelantan and Terengganu governments to pursue unpaid oil royalty and the Penang government on local elections. - Mkini
