Alliance Steel (M) Sdn Bhd has agreed to lower the height of the concrete wall encompassing the Malaysia-China Kuantan Industrial Park (MCKIP) to 1.8m, says Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister Ong Kian Ming.
Cynically dubbed by locals as Kuantan's "Great Wall of China", the new plan for the 9km-long concrete wall will be submitted to the Kuantan Municipal Council (MPK) for approval.
"Currently, the wall stands at about three metres, and what they've agreed on is to submit a new plan to the municipal council to say that they will review the wall in terms of specifications.
"If the plan is approved by MPK, they will reduce the height of the concrete wall to about 1.8m from 3m.
"They are allowed to maintain the concrete wall at 1.8m and for the rest, they can build up to 2.75m but with a transparent fencing," he told Malaysiakini today.
Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad had previously said in an interview with Malaysiakini that he would like to see the wall surrounding the MCKIP to come down, both literally and figuratively.
Ong (photo) said his visit to the park was for a briefing and to allow him to do a comparison with its sister park in Qinzhou, China.
"The objective of going to the MCKIP is to see for myself the entire blueprint of the whole park which also includes the current expansion plans for the Kuantan port," he added.
MCKIP and the Kuantan Port have a common shareholder and main developer, IJM Corporation. Ong said that IJM owned 15 percent of the Kuantan Port.
"I will be visiting the sister park in Qinzhou next week when I go to China.
"My ministry and our Chinese counterparts have agreed to hold a joint council meeting in October whereby we will talk about the development of both parks," said Ong. - Mkini
