‘LET ME BE CLEAR, I AM INNOCENT’: BIGGEST JOKE OR NOT, JHO LOW DARES TO MAKE BOLD-FACED STATEMENT DESPITE LOOMING ARREST – EVEN LAUNCHES WEBSITE TO COUNTER ‘GOSSIP’ DISGUISED AS FACTS

PENANG-BORN businessman Low Taek Jho today launched his own website to fend off allegations of wrongdoing relating to his role in the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) scandal.
Low is wanted by Malaysian and Singaporean authorities for allegedly siphoning at least US$4.5 billion (RM18.45 billion) from the state investment fund.
“Let me be clear: I am innocent,” he said in a signed letter on the website where he is described as a “global philanthropist, investor and entrepreneur”.
“With hindsight I may have done things differently, like any young person, but any mistakes I made do not amount to the sweepingly broad and destructive allegations being made against me,” Low said.
“I have been paraded in effigy through the streets of Kuala Lumpur and photographs from my younger days plastered in tabloids across the globe,” Low wrote.
“I only ask that everyone – courts, prosecutors and the general public – keep an open mind until all of the evidence comes to light.”
Another statement on the website slammed a new book by Wall Street Journal reporters, saying it was “written with allegations disguised as fact and gossip passed off as legitimate reporting”.
Low is the central figure in the book Billion Dollar Whale: The Man Who Fooled Wall Street, Hollywood, and the World, written by Bradley Hope and Nicholas T. Wright.
He is facing money-laundering charges levelled against him in absentia in Putrajaya last month, but has refused to submit to a trial claiming that he will not get a fair hearing in Malaysia.
The charges filed in Putrajaya were the first anywhere in the world against the elusive Low, who is said to be the mastermind behind the 1MDB scandal currently under investigation in several countries.
Billion Dollar Whale authors passing off ‘gossip’ as facts, says Jho Low
PENANG-BORN businessman Low Taek Jho, better known Jho Low, has slammed a book by Wall Street Journal journalists, saying it was “written with allegations disguised as fact and gossip passed off as legitimate reporting”.
The book, Billion Dollar Whale: The Man Who Fooled Wall Street, Hollywood, and the World, written by Bradley Hope and Nicholas T. Wright, goes on sale tomorrow.
Low is the central figure of the book, in which he is accused of looting billions from state investment firm 1Malaysia Development Bhd.
In a statement posted on his his newly launched website, the authors were criticised for attempting to make “instant history” with information that is “mostly about transactions undertaken by global financial institutions, sovereign wealth funds and the managers of 1MDB”.
“In fact, Low seems to disappear from the narrative when any of the alleged fraud occurs, only to then be accused – without any evidence – of having been responsible for it,” the website said.
“But, as The Financial Times noted (in its book review), that sort of tale doesn’t sell books or get the authors a movie deal. Thus, this book is written with allegations disguised as fact and gossip passed off as legitimate reporting.
“The narrative is framed to allow the authors to write about celebrities, and models and parties, without ever proving any of the allegations.”
