Nurul Izzah: I will be a voice of conscience, not a pawn

Nurul Izzah Anwar underlined her credentials in a debate among the four candidates for the PKR vice-president, saying that she will be a voice of conscience within the party and the Pakatan Harapan administration.
In the debate, which was aired on Astro Awani, Nurul Izzah stressed that she will not become a "pawn."
"The reform agenda is for continuous betterment. I will become an MP and a vice-president who is not a pawn.
"I want to always be the voice of conscience that reminds both federal and state governments about their responsibility to abide by the reform agenda.
"The actual implementation of this agenda must follow the plan. Reformation is not just a catchphrase... it needs to be implemented and we must do it as quickly as possible," she said.
Nurul Izzah also stated that PKR members should be cognisant of what her father, PKR president-elect Anwar Ibrahim, symbolises to the party's struggle.
"Anwar was not just denied freedom, he was also denied his rights as a citizen who is innocent (of the crimes he was accused of) – the right to hold a political position, to contest in politics, to spread his wings and show his talent.
"For years, he endured pressure and cruelty. Of course, there are parties who are concerned about him... but we cannot deny the symbol that he has become to PKR members.
"A little empathy will ease tensions (in the party)," she said.
The other contenders for the PKR vice-president posts that participated in tonight's debate were Deputy Primary Industries Minister Shamsul Iskandar Md Akin, PKR central committee chairperson Johari Abdul, and vice-president Tian Chua.

They will vie against nine other candidates, including Selayang MP William Leong, former Subang Jaya Municipal Council member Michael Tamil, and Water, Land and Natural Resources Minister Dr Xavier Jayakumar. -Mkini
