Dr Mahathir Mohamad said today that he forgives public relations guru Lim Kok Wing.
The prime minister also noted that some only support those in power.
“We know some people look for the easy way. When someone is in power, they support them.
“When I had no power they did not support me. When I am back in power, they support me,” he said in relation to the lashing his daughter Marina gave Lim on social media earlier today.
When asked whether he forgave Lim, Mahathir said: “I am a very forgiving person.”
Mahathir was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the Bersatu general assembly in Putrajaya today.
Lim tweeted this morning that Mahathir was “absolutely right in saying that we just need to set our hearts and minds on achieving greater goals to be a great nation.”
Marina responded later in a tweet of her own and accused Lim of being critical of Mahathir just last year.
“If Pakatan Harapan hadn’t won, would you have snuck into our house uninvited at Raya to apologise? Just stop it,” wrote Marina.
In 2015, Mahathir had written a blog post about a friend-turned-foe likely alluding to Lim.
Mahathir said that the friend had attempted to persuade him to stop criticising then prime minister Najib Abdul Razak.
“He warned if I continue I would lose my legacy. I told him what people think of my legacy, if there is any, is not important. I am concerned about what is happening in the country. Our good reputation is being eroded.
“He repeated several times that I would lose my legacy. I really appreciated his concern. He is a friend and I felt he cared for me. We parted as friends,” he added in his blog.
Marina slams Lim Kok Wing for supporting Dr M, after he previously told her dad to shut up
Marina in replying to Lim’s tweet said: “Do stop it @limkokwing! Where were you last year? Who was it who told Dad to shut up to ‘preserve his legacy’?.
She further said: “If PH (Pakatan Harapan) hadn’t won, would you have snuck into our house uninvited Raya to apologise. Just stop it.”
In May 2015, Lim was appointed as then Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s public relation campaign coordinator.
He only had a short stint as in July he resigned from the position.
His appointment, believed to be to help burnish Najib’s image, was announced amid the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) crisis, which has put him under the spotlight for alleged corruption.
The move to appoint Lim was also mocked by Najib’s critics as an indication of fear within the administration over how its media coverage was being directed amid worsening attacks by Dr Mahathir.
Dr Mahathir had in a blog post without mentioning name said a friend had attempted to persuade him to cease criticising Najib.
Dr Mahathir said the friend warned that if he continues he would lose his legacy.
Though he did not mention names, it was obvious that Dr Mahathir was referring to Lim Kok Wing.
