BERSATU AGM | Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin today said that no applications to join the party from former Umno leaders or lawmakers have been approved so far.
This includes the application by former Malacca chief minister Abdul Rahim Thamby Chik who submitted his application to Malacca Bersatu chief Mohd Redzuan Yusof earlier this month.
"None have been approved because as we have agreed and this has been made public, they need to go through a certain cooling off period as independents.
"And then they will go through the process of vetting," Muhyiddin said at a press conference ahead of the launch of Bersatu's Armada (Youth wing) and Srikandi (Women's wing) annual general meetings tonight.
Earlier this month, another 10 MPs had quit Umno, accusing its president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi of failing to chart a proper direction for the party.
Of the 16 Umno MPs who have quit the party since its loss in the 14th general election, 12 are presently independent but have expressed support for Mahathir.
Muhyiddin also said that delegates have been given the freedom to raise various issues in their debates with a particular focus on Bersatu's role as a party within Pakatan Harapan.
"As we have agreed, the debates by delegates will not be open to the public to encourage them to speak up," he explained.
A total of 1,539 central delegates will be present for Bersatu's second AGM with the largest delegation, 534 members, coming from Johor. -Mkini
