A Malaysian planning to attack leaders of political parties and non-Muslims was among the 16 people arrested on suspicion of terrorism.
In a statement, Bukit Aman Special Branch Counter-Terrorism Division (E8) principal assistant director Ayob Khan said the suspect believed that these politicians and non-Muslims were disrespecting Islam and the Malays.
Responding to this, former Bar Council president Ambiga Sreenevasan trained her guns on politicians sowing discord in the nation.
“I hope our irresponsible and racist politicians who peddle hate and divisiveness are reading this,” she tweeted this afternoon.
Meanwhile, Bernama reported that those arrested comprised 12 Indonesians, three locals and one Indian national.
They were detained in Sabah, Pahang, Johor, Penang, Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.
“The suspects were detained in a special operation between Aug 10 until yesterday,” Ayob told a press conference in Bukit Aman, Kuala Lumpur.
According to Ayob, two Malaysians detained in Sabah were responsible for spreading Islamic State propaganda and acted as facilitators for an Indonesian couple and three of their children who carried out a suicide bombing attack on a church in Jolo, southern Philippines, last December.
The pair also arranged for funds to be channelled to the Maute terrorist group in southern Philippines.
Ayob also revealed how some of the suspects created new Islamic State cells in Malaysia and promoted the group through social media.
“They were also active in recruiting new members, including Indonesians and Malaysians, and planned to launch attacks in Malaysia and Indonesia after recruiting as many members as possible,” he added.
As for the Indian national, Ayub said the 38-year-old woman, who worked as a cleaner, was a member of the Sikh For Justice group.
Umno leader links Penang shooting to religious insults despite IGP’s warning
An Umno leader has linked the recent shooting in Bayan Lepas, Penang to religious insults despite a warning by police against wild allegations about the case.
Puteri Umno vice-chief Nurul Amal Mohd Fauzi, in a ceramah last night, repeated allegations on social media that the man whom police shot had gone amok after two people allegedly insulted the Prophet Muhammad.
“Yesterday a martyr was laid to rest. Sheikh Mohd Khairil was shot because he went amok in front of two kafirs who insulted the Prophet Muhammad,” she said in Kubang Kerian, Kelantan.
She said this in her opening remarks at a ceramah organised by Kubang Kerian PAS.
Just several hours earlier, Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador had warned against the spread of false allegations regarding the case.
“Don’t make such assumptions that will trigger unrest in society to create a perspective that a segment of society is oppressed by the other segment,” Hamid (photo) said.
He said based on police investigations, they found that the man was heavily influenced by clips from the Middle East purportedly showing the plight of Muslims in the region.
Police said they are hunting down three suspects who have spread the allegations linking the case to alleged insults to the Prophet.
On Monday, police shot dead Sheikh Mohd Khairil, 25, who ran amok, causing the death of a 47-year old female supervisor and injured a 53-year old security manager.
Penang police said the suspect is believed to have been suffering from depression for several months and had been absent from work for a week.
Penang Southwest district police chief A A Anbalagan said police who arrived at the scene told the man to surrender but instead attacked them with a parang, prompting the officers to shoot in self-defence.
