JOHOR BAHRU: The Johor chapter of Barisan Nasional has resolved that only a local candidate will contest in the by-election for the Tanjung Piai Parliamentary constituency.
State BN chairman Hasni Mohammad said the resolution had already been conveyed to the component parties, including Johor Umno.
“I can confirm that we will have a local candidate,” he told reporters shortly after the conclusion of a special meeting of the Johore Umno liaison committee.
Hasni, who also heads the liaison committee, had been asked about the criteria for the candidate to be nominated by Johor Umno.
The reply given by Hasni quashes talk that an outsider would stand for the BN.
In another development, Hasni said that the meeting had also unanimously nominated Sembrong Umno division leader Hishammuddin Hussein as the new Umno secretary-general. - FMT
