Be more positive about 5G, urges MCMC chief

KUALA LUMPUR: People need to view Malaysia’s 5G rollout plan more positively and need to change their mindset when it comes to its implementation.
Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) chief Al-Ishal Ishak said the discussion on 5G seems similar to the discussion on internet technology back in the early 1990s.
“The same concerns are being raised — are we ready for it, are we going too fast?
“When I attended the internet summit in Las Vegas in 1996, I was standing by the staircase and I saw Microsoft embracing the idea of the internet wholeheartedly,” he said during the keynote panel session of a forum on 5G infrastructure at Mobile 360 today.
He said regulators and stakeholders have gone around the country to discuss with the local governments on the challenges in getting 5G on the road.
Ishal hopes stakeholders and the public would look into the opportunity window that 5G is bringing and tap into it while it’s still open.
Asked to comment on the 5G tests in certain places in Putrajaya in April, Ishal said these had been a success but it only covered certain aspects, like equipment and signal interference. The real test will be the national rollout over the next few months.
Earlier this month, Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo said that a public test on 5G nationwide will begin next month.
The 5G rollout is part of the government’s National Fiberisation and Connectivity Plan (NFCP), for which the government has allocated RM21.6 billion.
Gobind hopes that by being among the first to be committed early to 5G, Malaysia will be in the forefront of its implementation, behind countries like the United States, United Kingdom and China. - FMT
